Care & Cleaning Guide
Routine maintenance
Dust window treatments weekly using a vacuum brush attachment on low suction. Move the brush in the direction the slats or pleats run. Routine dusting prevents dirt from embedding in fabric and is the single most effective way to extend the life of any window covering.
Cellular and pleated shades
Compressed air (a can of electronics duster) clears dust from inside the honeycomb cells. For light stains, blot with a soft cloth dampened with mild soap and lukewarm water. Do not rub. Do not submerge. For heavy soiling, contact us about manufacturer ultrasonic cleaning service ($45–$95 per shade).
Roller and solar shades
Wipe with a soft, dry microfiber cloth. For stains, spot-clean with a damp cloth and mild dish soap, then wipe dry. Avoid abrasive sponges and bleach-based cleaners; they will damage the protective coating.
Wood and faux wood blinds
Real wood blinds: dust weekly; clean with a wood-furniture polish twice a year. Never use water on real wood; it will warp the slats. Faux wood blinds: water-safe; wipe with a damp cloth and mild detergent as needed. Tilt slats fully open, wipe one side, then close and wipe the other.
Plantation shutters
Hardwood shutters: dust weekly with a microfiber cloth or soft brush. Polish with a wood conditioner annually. Composite and vinyl shutters: water-safe and easy to wipe down with mild detergent.
Drapery and Roman shades
Vacuum monthly with a brush attachment on low suction. Professionally dry-clean every 2–3 years; ask the cleaner for a French-pleat-friendly process to preserve the heading. Spot-clean small stains immediately with a soft white cloth and cold water; never use hot water on protein-based stains (food, blood) as it will set them.
Motorized systems
Wipe motors and battery wands with a dry cloth only. Recharge battery wands every 6–12 months depending on use. Replace batteries in remotes annually. Schedule firmware updates through the manufacturer's app twice a year.
Sun-damaged treatments
UV exposure is the leading cause of premature fading and fabric brittleness on south- and west-facing windows. Hunter Douglas fabrics are warranted against fading for 7 years; if you notice color shift before then, contact us for a warranty claim.
